News and events 2010

Our Lady of Fatima College in Rosebud held a mini fete on November 22, 2010. A big thank-you to all the staff, in particular to Mrs Bernadette Turner. They raised $2100 from the day’s events, a truly wonderful achievement! The day is best summed up in the words of a student:

Our mini fete day for the Isabella and Marcus foundation was one of the best days I have ever had at school.  My teacher, Mrs. Turner told us about a family that she knows really well.  She told us about a young boy named Marcus and how he had died from a very nasty brain tumor at the young age of 5.  We looked at the website and saw photos of both Isabella and Marcus- we were all really sad, but we also learnt a lot from the website about pediatric brain tumor research.

We decided to raise some funds for the foundation.  We worked really hard; each grade in the school came up with an idea for a stall.  Some of the things we did: Popcorn, Pot of luck- you paid a gold coin donation and got to select a cup which had small prizes in it, Toy sale, Turner’s Treat which included selling snow cones, decorate your own cup cake, mini milkshakes, chocolate fountain, hoop toss, make a wish for Isabella and Marcus, Jaffa roll, bubbles and much more.  Before lunch each class did a few different activities about Isabella’s and Marcus’ favourite things like fairies and super hero’s, we also read a book that Isabella has written. After lunch we started the mini fete.  All the students went around to different classes and spent heaps of money.  The parents also joined us and the fete went into the afternoon.  The day was heaps of fun and we enjoyed helping The Isabella and Marcus fund.

First Annual Ladies Morning Tea

A testimony to the power of Sisterhood!  120 women attended and a total of $6000 was raised. The guest of honour was Katie Walsh, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Childrens Cancer Centre, who was responsible for bringing together two grieving mothers, which eventually led to the formation of this Fund. Also in attendance was Dr. Pratiti Bandopadhaya, one of Marcus’ oncologists. A special thank-you to the raffle team of Jo Poali, Linda Simonis and Feral Lagios for making the day a success. All of the items for silent auction and raffle were generously donated by small businesses, thank-you. At the end of the day, many women left inspired to fundraise on behalf of the fund. Thank-you ladies.

The winner of Silent Auction prize - " A Night out with Tony & Robert" - Basil Scafidi enjoyed a wonderful evening at Etihad Stadium dining while watching a Melbourne Victory Soccer match. All the boys had a fun night - so ladies save those pennies for this year you don't want to miss out on this prize again!

Melbourne Marathon 2010

The Melbourne Marathon on Sunday 10th October was a truly fantastic day!  It was a cold start to what warmed up to be a tremendous day for all involved.

"Team Isabella and Marcus" had 62 runners and walkers competing in all events, thanks to all for your incredible effort and amazing show of support. Congratulations to our competitors in the massive 42km marathon, an amazing achievement: Ottavio Boron from www.tournamenttennis.com.au completed in 3.59:55 - and still took the time to point to the logo on his t-shirt for the official photographers.  Also to Talia who ran a personal best time in just over 4 hours. Many thanks for representing the Isabella and Marcus fund.

A sincere thanks to all participants of "Team Isabella & Marcus" who looked fabulous in their team logo t-shirts.  A huge thank you to Warren from Wojo Signs Pty Ltd  and Richard from Blazeart who very generously donated the t-shirts for the day’s events. Thank you for the lovely logo, it looked fantastic and all were very happy to wear them. The t-shirts with the logo were a way to promote the fund and many of our participants were keen to maximise exposure from the event photographers.

A huge thanks to Darren Fenech and the Macquarie Group Foundation for generously sponsoring Darren in his 21km half marathon run, completing in 1:48 time. Our thanks to Robert & Jo Paoli and Steve & Marolyn Mercuri - they did so much towards recruiting runners and sponsors - they really got the ball rolling.

Many thanks to the wonderful children at Edithvale Primary School who with the help of their teachers Amanda Scafidi and Deb Short prepared an amazingly beautiful banner that was displayed at the MCG with the cheer squad, so that runners and walkers for "Team Isabella & Marcus" could find us. It was truly lovely of Marcus' old kinder friends to present the fund with such a lovely gift.  Great job kids thank you!

Thanks to all those who donated so generously to the "first official fundraising event", which has raised a total of $30,000. Well done to all on an excellent achievement - great things truly can happen when people work together!  Rest and see you all next year at the MCG!

International Marathon News

While on family holidays Tony Ruberto (Marcus' dad) ran the Mezza di Befana in Buggiano, Tuscany Italy. Tony ran the 21.1 km half marathon in 1:53 an excellent result for quite a challenging course. Tony proudly represented the "Isabella & Marcus Fund" in his first International race. Well done Tony!

School Fundraisers

Thomas Mitchell Primary School hosted it's second annual fundraiser in memory of Isabella. Principal, John Hurley summed the day up nicely:
Congratulations and a big "thank-you" to all parents, students and staff, for the way they entered into the spirit of our Free Dress Day yesterday. We raised $1470.80 in donations for the Isabella and Marcus Fund. It was just wonderful to see how many students (and staff) were dressed in a whole range of beautiful clothes. A special thanks to parents for the effort that many of you went to for your children and to support the fundraiser.

St Francis of Assisi Primary School held a free dress day in honour of Luke Ciavarella, who died from DIPG in Sept 2009, 7 years of age. The enthusiastic support of the school community contributed $1000.

Flowers for Marcus

Gabriella Ruberto (Marcus' cousin) and her friend Cyanna collected bunches of flowers from their garden and made balloon designs to sell outside there home - they also had a lucky dip - to help raise money for the Isabella & Marcus fund. They raised a total of $1.60 and we sincerely thank them for their wonderfully creative idea. Fantastic work girls!

Sausage Sizzles

Feral Lagios and her team of helpers at Coles Mulgrave Office were the first to embark on the "Organise your own fundraiser" idea. With the support of Coles, who donated sausages and bread, $980 was raised from the sausage sizzle and selling of ‘Isabella and Marcus Fund’ wristbands.

Steven Ruberto (Marcus' uncle) organised a sausage sizzle on the job site for some of the tradies and they raised a total of $240 during their lunch break. It was Steven's first attempt at public speaking as he discussed the goals of the fund with some of the boys. A great effort, thanks guys!

Draegar Safety Pacific in Mt Waverley held a Footy dress up and Sausage Sizzle day to celebrate the AFL Grand Final, No 1. It proved to be a hugely successful day raising a total of $500.  Sincere thanks to Danillee and Sandra for organising this event and raising awareness of the disease.

Carols by Candelight

This event was held at the home of Giovanni and Stella Ruberto, paternal grandparents of Marcus. They raised $1600 for the fund. Before passing away, Marcus asked Stella if he could attend a Carols by Candlelight event but sadly he died one month before Christmas.

Staff at the the Shire of Kalamunda in WA, held a raffle. The prize; bottles of champagne, chocolate, peanuts and 2 champagne glasses was drawn on Oct 27. Thank-you to Davina Sandhu for organising this fundraiser. Amount raised, $552.40.

Proceeds of Sale, Nov 27 2010

Mariella Mabilia from "Move Mode" - a line of imported Italian clothes - was the first to embark on the idea of conducting a party plan and donating 15% of sales to the Isabella & Marcus Fund. Thank you Mariella and ladies for donating a total of $300 to the fund.

We hope it was a happy day shopping for all involved, a truly fantastic effort.
